The Houseboat (Manufacturing) Capital of the World

By Devon Neal

Their arms are trembling assembly beams,
their hands fleshy socket wrenches beading with blood,
their sweat the first seaspray on the hull.

Days end with a ringing stamp on a manila card
and a rattling drive in a multicolored car.
They scrutinize pay stubs in dimly-lit kitchens—

stones on the coast of a craft-studded sea.
