In another universe…
I have never cried.
I have never worked a job I didn’t want.
My friends all live in the same city.
In another universe…
I drive a brand-new car and
I don’t love you more than you love me.
In another universe…
I don’t cut off pieces of myself to fit into yours.
In another universe…
I stand up for myself.
My parents never leave me.
I never have to bus the rich’s dirty dishes.
In another universe…
I realize I am a lesbian sooner rather than later.
In another universe…
I don’t obsess over anything other than myself.
I grow up in a different part of Texas.
(I never meet you)
In another universe…
I am happy in a different way than I am in this one.
Not better, but different.
Meredith Brown (she/her) is a Lesbian poet and EB Garamond apologist based in Austin, Texas. What she lacks in a bachelor’s degree she makes up for in unadulterated passion. Everything she writes is from the invaluable perspective of a Queer woman born into an abusive home in the deep south. Each piece aims to be a voice for others who feel they are alone in perceived isolation. When she’s not serving Iced Tea to the rich, she can be found at home with her partner and their kitten Baloo. The first two weeks of Baloo’s life were spent in a field. He brought a sense of unprecedented freedom to their apartment and made it wild. She tries to be wild too.
